Natclovir (Ganciclovir) 250 mg
Natclovir 250 mg is an antiviral medication specifically designed to fight Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Active ingredient: Ganciclovir (250 mg).
Manufacturer: Natco Pharma (India). Generic equivalent of Cymevene.
Mechanism:
It works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA. While it doesn't cure CMV completely (the virus remains dormant), it effectively stops the active disease from destroying organs, particularly the eyes (retina) in immunocompromised patients.
✅ Key Use: Critical for preserving vision in AIDS patients with CMV retinitis.
Indicated for:
- CMV Retinitis: Maintenance treatment in immunocompromised patients, including those with AIDS.
- CMV Prophylaxis: Prevention of CMV disease in transplant recipients at risk of infection.
Strength: 250 mg capsule.
⚠️ HIGH PILL BURDEN WARNING:
Due to low bioavailability, high daily doses are required:
- Standard Maintenance Dose: 1000 mg (4 capsules) three times daily. Total: 12 capsules/day.
🍲 Instruction: Must be taken WITH FOOD. Food increases absorption significantly. Drink plenty of fluids to protect your kidneys.
- Severe Bone Marrow Suppression: Absolute neutrophil count < 500/mm³ or platelets < 25,000/mm³.
- Hypersensitivity to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, or acyclovir.
- Pregnancy (Teratogenic) and breastfeeding.
Men: Must use barrier contraception during and for 90 days after treatment.
Close monitoring is required due to toxicity:
- Hematologic: Neutropenia (low white blood cells) and Thrombocytopenia are very common. Frequent blood tests are mandatory.
- Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, anorexia.
- Renal: Elevated creatinine (stay hydrated).
- Fever and fatigue.
