Arsenam 10 (Arsenic Trioxide) 10 mg/10 mL
Arsenam 10 (Arsenic Trioxide 10 mg/10 ml) is a specialized antineoplastic agent.
Manufacturer: GLS Pharma (India). It is a generic version of Trisenox. Historically known as a poison, in modern oncology, it acts as a potent life-saving drug for specific leukemia types.
Mechanism of Action ("Targeted Apoptosis"):
Arsenic Trioxide induces partial differentiation and promotes apoptosis (programmed cell death) of leukemic cells. It specifically targets the PML-RARα fusion protein, which is the root cause of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, forcing cancer cells to mature and die naturally.
✅ Key Benefit: High remission rates in patients with relapsed or refractory APL.
Indicated specifically for:
- 🩸 Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL): Particularly for induction of remission and consolidation in patients who are refractory to, or have relapsed from, retinoid and anthracycline chemotherapy.
- Characterized by the presence of the t(15;17) translocation.
Packaging: 10 ml Vial (Concentration 1 mg/ml).
⚠️ ADMINISTRATION & SAFETY:
- 💉 IV Infusion: Must be administered intravenously over 1-2 hours. NEVER as a bolus push.
- ⚡ ECG Monitoring: Arsenic can cause serious heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation). An ECG is mandatory before dosing.
- 🧪 Electrolytes: Potassium and Magnesium levels must be maintained in the normal range to protect the heart.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (embryo-fetal toxicity).
- Hypersensitivity to arsenic.
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias (specifically congenital long QT syndrome).
Critical side effects to watch for:
- 🚨 APL Differentiation Syndrome: A potentially fatal complication (fever, dyspnea, fluid retention). Requires immediate treatment with high-dose corticosteroids.
- ❤️ QT Prolongation: Irregular heartbeat.
- 🤢 Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
- Hyperleukocytosis (rapid increase in white blood cells).
